    Leather Quality And Leather Grades

     

    When we speak about leather, the first point to consider is its quality.

     

    How do we define the quality of the leather?

     

    And do you always need the best leather for all your products? The answer is that you might not always need a prime cut of leather to obtain a good final product. For example, the inner layer of a shoe can be made with cheaper leather, while you need very thin and luxurious leather for jackets and furniture.

  • How do leather goods wholesalers define the quality of the hide?

     

     

    You are probably still asking yourself: but what is the best leather? To answer this question every leather goods manufacturer must consider different factors.

     

    Type of animal

     

    Leather can be obtained from mammals (cattle, pigs, sheep, goats…), reptiles (snakes, crocodiles…) and other less common exotic animals (cammels, llamas…). Moreover, different breeds may show different qualities: some cattle might have thicker skin than others.

     

     

    Physical location and climate

     

    Cows that live in cooler climates have cleaner skins because fewer insects could damage their hides, and therefore show scars and wrinkles. Weather conditions also contribute directly to the thickness of the skin. Colder climates create ticker hides.

     

     

    The layer and the portion of the hide

     

    Some layers of the hide have an intrinsically higher quality than others.

     

    Depending on the way the leather was split, we can have:

     

    1. Full-grain leather

    2. Top grain leather

    3. Genuine leather

    4. Split-grain leather

    5. Bonded leather

     

    Each type of grain has unique qualities and thickness. As we already said, this is also a factor that defines the type of final product.

     

    Thinner hides are used for leather jackets, furniture, and moldings. On the another hand, thicker leather is used for leather belts, knife sheaths, and dog collars. Therefore, leather card holder makers will know exactly what kind of hide they need.

     

    The cut of the hide

     

    This is one of the most important factors that we are going to discuss later in detail. For now, we will just say that some portions (i.e. cuts) of the skin aremore expensive because they give a better raw material.

     

    Processing and tanning

     

    Tanning is the process that creates leather from raw skin. During this process, even small leather goods manufacturers can show all their abilities.

     

    Highly skilled workers and talented technicians can create high-quality products even from cheaper cuts of the hide.

     

     

    Leather quality grades

     

    The quality of the cut of leather will be defined already at the farm.Inspectors at the farms will analyze raw hides and give them a grade depending on some objective parameters. In this way, the leather goods manufacturer will know what is buying and what the quality of the final leather product will be. There are four grades of leather in total.

     

     

    1, Grade one: highest leather quality

     

    More than 80% of the hides sent to leather goods suppliers are from this first category. Those are skins with almost no imperfections and holes that can be easily trimmed away. Grade one represents the top choice for leather accessories.

     

     

    2, Grade two: medium leather quality

     

    Grade two hides will show bigger imperfections and have up to 4 holes in a straight line. This skin can still be used by tanners and counts 15-20% of the total leather sent to manufacturers.

     

    3, Grade three: lower quality leather

     

    In the third category, we find leather that will lose around 50% of its area during production. This is due to the presence of 5 or more holes and many imperfections. This type of leather is generally not purchased by the leather goods manufacturer.

     

    4, Grade four: untannable

     

    Skins from this fourth category cannot be used by the leather industry due to the very low quality of the hide.

  • Types of Leather Cuts Used By Leather Goods Supplier

     

    As we already said earlier in this text, every particular cut of the hide is different and there are different levels of leather quality.

    Not every cut is suited for high-quality products and this is something that the leather goods manufacturer knows very well.

    Here we are going to describe the different types of cuts. Every cut can come as a whole or just as half of it.

    For example, you can either have a bend or a double bend: the double bend comes from both the left and the right sides of the animal.

     

    Different type of cuts

     

    1, Whole & side cut

     

    The whole cut is obviously made out of all the hide and shows all different ranges of quality, with both softer and thicker areas. The whole cut can be divided lengthwise along the middle, hence the name side cut.

     

     

    2, Shoulder & double shoulder cut

     

    As the name suggests, this type of cut comes from the shoulders of the animal. It is firm, yet malleable and quite flexible. The quality of this cut can vary, from good to fair, but it is definitely not the highest. Shoulder cuts work well for tooling.

     

     

    3, Bend Leather & double leather cut

     

    This is the cut with the highest quality and is made by less than 13% of the the whole area of the hide. It is taken from the spine towards the belly. It is also the prime choice for clothing: the fiber is solid and water-resistant. It is not a surprising fact that this is the most expensive leather but also the most recommended with the highest guarantee of best results.

     

     

    4, Butt leather & double butt leather cut

     

    This area of the hide is extremely thick and firm. It is therefore very well suited for items that require a robust structure, such as heavy belts. Although not a prime cut, butt leather still has a good quality.

     

     

    5, Belly leather and double belly leather cut

     

    This cut of leather is taken from the outer edges of the hide. The quality of the leather is quite poor and is generally used where the leather does not need to be seen, such as in the inner sole of shoes. This part of the hide is soft and stretchy.

  • Differences Between Chrome and Vegetable Tanned Leather

     

     

    The hide alone does not make leather. In fact, what we see and use as leather is made through a process called tanning. To use the hide and transform it into high-quality leather, the leather goods manufacturer has to remove water molecules from the skin.

     

    The water is trapped inside the collagen, which is a type of protein that builds the structure of the hide. The only process used until the late the industrial revolution was vegetable tanning which, as the name suggests, was made with plant-based chemicals.

     

    However, in 1858 chrome tanning was invented and revolutionized the game of tanning. The process became much quicker and cheaper thanks to the use of chemicals such as chromium (hence the name).

     

     

    Chrome-tanned leather

     

    Today, more than 90% of the world’s leather is made through chrome tanning. It is still the cheapest and most reliable way to produce leather from rawhide. The process can generally be made in less than a day and creates very thin and shiny leather. Moreover, the color of the leather remains unchanged during its entire lifespan.

     

     

    Vegetable-tanned leather

     

    On the other side, vegetable-tanned leather is sold today as a more expensive and deluxe product. In fact, the whole process can take up to two months and requires skilled craftsmanship.

     

    This type of leather also has a particular finish that changes over time, which some buyers might consider as a plus. Finally, vegetable leather has a lower environmental impact.

     

    What is the most preferred option by leather goods wholesalers?

     

    It would not be fair to say that one option is better than the other. It all depends on the needs of the customer. For bigger quantities, quicker and cheaper delivery, chrome-tanned leather should always be the first choice.

     

    The leather is still high-quality but comes at a more affordable price for the final buyer. On the other hand, vegetable-tanned leather is great if you want to create a niche product that sells less but comes at a higher price.

     

    Items made with this leather are generally preferred by the upper class with bigger buying potential and in search for a unique product. In fact, each product will be different and will get better over time.
